It’s not like most of us
wake up in the morning
and choose between life and death

It’s not like what kind of flowers to bring
or whether or not
to carry an umbrella

Life rains down on us
and we grow or wither
But there are signs as if something knows

Friends come and go
even as their stories linger
as if the only time we have lasts forever
