arithmetical & regular. You think I won’t
get up to things in the dark,

too fearful to surprise anyone, even
	myself. When you drop me,

doll-like, you imagine I won’t rise up
& stalk you where your head

rests on its pillow, that I won’t take
	a box-cutter trophy, some part

easily reached. You think me
	laughable & so turn away

from your drink where it beckons
	for what you’d never

consider. A bridge knows by weight
	all that cross its spans,

still it gasps at the final fracture
	that ruins it.
