KYSO Flash
Knock-Your-Socks-Off Art and Literature
“Flash isn’t a fad, it’s an art; and while I hope people can have fun with it, its pursuit should still be taken seriously.”
— Tara L. Masih, editor of Rose Metal Press Field Guide to Writing Flash Fiction

B8. Admin fees collected (USD):

36 submissions multiplied by $5 each = $180

$180 minus 25% Submittable processing fee of $44.64 = $135.36

$135.36 minus refund of admin fee to 19 contributors for a total of $95 = $40.36

Net amount of $40.36 will be applied toward Submittable annual subscription fee of $174 (i.e., $14.50 billed monthly).

B9. Sources where writers learned about KYSO Flash’s call for submissions:

  •  AWP (Association of Writers & Writing Programs): 2
  •  Every Writer’s Resource: 2
  •  Facebook: 8
  •  Literary Mama: 1
  •  Other, such as instructor or advisor: 7
  •  The Review Review: 9
  •  Unspecified: 1
  •  Winning Writers tweet: 2
  •  WritingCareer.com: 1
  •  Total number of writers who submitted work via Submittable = 33

B10. Notes from Clare MacQueen about advertising data:

  •  An ad placed online with The Review Review under “Call for Submissions” only cost $20 for the entire month of July, and attracted the highest number of submissions: nine, with a total of 19 works, of which seven were accepted. This works out to roughly $2.86 each in ad costs per acceptance. (Thank you, Becky Tuch!)

  •  Interesting to contrast that with the one-time Twitter ad posted by Winning Writers for $30, which netted just two submissions—only one of which was accepted.

  •  All other sources listed above in B9 were free of charge, including the notice at AWP—where editors of new journals may submit a brief ad to a pool from which notices are then drawn randomly for publication.

  •  By the way, the folks at New Pages didn’t want my money. They refused my request for an ad because KYSO Flash “lacks editorial transparency.” Not to mention a track record, of course. Maybe I will try them again next year after KF achieves both.

  •  In the meantime, I placed an ad under Calls for Manuscripts in Poets & Writers, which cost $150 and will run September through October 2014 on their website.

  •  One last tidbit: Because we ask a five-dollar admin fee per submission category, KYSO Flash is not eligible for a listing in Duotrope. This is another reason I offer detailed data here for editors and potential contributors.
